Case Study – Augmenting Actual Reality at Gensler: Creative technology projects from my time in architecture, the years leading up to it, and the through-line between them.
Description
Augmented reality was never a singular discipline. It’s game engines and cinematography, sensors and interaction design, hardware, code and physical space all working in harmony.
Translating between these fields is a discipline unto itself, built from decades of work across entertainment, animation, engineering and interactive media – and is now reshaping practice at the world’s largest architecture firm. Test fits are becoming user journeys, static spaces are becoming immersive experiences, lighting design is becoming an expressive storytelling platform.
This exchange runs both ways. New ideas from the AR world can animate the built environment while centuries of thinking about what it means to occupy space can inform digital experience as the field evolves.
And we can all have a lot more fun in the process!
